This month the main article is on how to overcome fear of public speaking, plus we have our regular Mind Map tip and quote of the month.
If you are delivering a seminar away from your workplace, for example in a hotel, make a Mind Map of all the equipment and materials that you need. Highlight each item on the Mind Map as you pack your bags or load your car. This is much more effective than writing a linear list. The Mind Mapping process will generate more thoughts and hence a more complete and detailed list, thereby ensuring that you don't forget any vital piece of kit.

Many years ago a now legendary survey by the New York Times of people's greatest fears revealed that the fear of public speaking ranked above the fear of death!
With the application of some simple techniques Public Speaking can be transformed from a fate worse than death into something enjoyable. It really gives me a buzz to stand up in front of a room and talk about subjects that I'm passionate about. It is the ultimate in flattery to think that everyone in the audience has given up time and money to listen to what I have to say!
So, how do you cancel out the fear? Most people fear the unknown. If you're not properly prepared then you can easily get into a flap and panic. By far the easiest way to prepare a presentation is to create a Mind Map. (see http://www.learning-tech.co.uk/Newsletter_June_05.htm ) The following process will ensure that you are well prepared:
When you give the speech you only need the single page Mind Map with its key words as prompts. You may even remember the content without referring to your Mind Map!
So now you're prepared but you can still feel nervous before you get into the flow of things. Some basic Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) will help you here. Our state of mind can be controlled by a technique called anchoring. You simply replace your state of nervousness with a state of confidence that you have previously stored or 'anchored'. A friend of mine, also a professional speaker, has a 'dream book'. This a little album with letters of thanks, testimonials and photos that represent his goals. He simply looks through this before he goes on stage and it fires him up and fills him with confidence. In his mind he has a very powerful association to the images.
|A similar technique that I really like is something called the circle of excellence. Just before you speak visualise a circle on the floor in front of you. This imaginary circle is mentally associated with giving an excellent presentation. If you like you can imagine it bathed in energising light or like a 'Star Trek' transporter. As you step into it you are immediately filled with confidence and ready to shine!|
There are other ways you can 'anchor' confidence - For example, every time you are confident, not necessarily when speaking, make a specific movement. For example, touch your earlobe. Over time the feeling of confidence becomes linked to the movement. So before you speak, touch you earlobe and you will regain the feeling of confidence.
Next time you have the opportunity to give a presentation of a speech, remember to prepare with a Mind Map, use a memory system to memorise the key points of the presentation and use the NLP techniques to step up with total confidence. Before long you'll be seeking speaking engagements for pleasure and profit!
